Friday, July 28, 2006 ::: MURDER Oh, Ronan, what have you done? While I'm sure there were more than a handful of murder of classics in pop history, I really didn't expect this from you. It's no secret that you've done too many cover songs to secure your single sales and chart positions. And it's also obvious that your debut album was your best work ever and your subsequent albums were just a constant downhill slide. Your earlier singles were major hits and were really great songs, remember 'Life Is A Rollercoaster' and 'When You Say Nothing At All'? Both were not covers but both deserve to be named classic. It was ok when you chose to cover 'If Tomorrow Never Comes', because the song wasn't a great song to start with. You even covered your own Boyzone (or rather Cat Stevens') 'Father and Son', but that's tolerable considering that it's for your own 10 years of 'hit's. But now you've decided to cover Iris - a Goo Goo Dolls classic. And look what you've done. You've officially murdered a classic. Your version lacks everything the original has - except that you did keep the same tune. I'm sorry to say this, but I really hope to see your single flop. You managed to pick a really good song, but I'm not going to give you any credit for that. Your rendition of this classic is soulless, do you even know what the lyrics is about? You tried too hard to try not to sing off key for the chorus. But you even failed at that. Ladies and gentlemen, you can be a judge too. Ronan's version of Iris. And here's the original Goo Goo Dolls' version. And that video of yours. Is it funded by the Dubai government or what? We all know you filmed it in Duba. And we all know you can ride a horse. So what? It's just a soulless video accompanying a soulless song - which makes it a rather appropriate video in that sense. Do you even care what the lyrics is about? But I know for your label this is all on track according to your plans. All they care about is: 1. Pick a song that's coverable. Ah maybe the Goo Goo Dolls need a bit of cash right now. Perfect. 2. Ask Ronan to record it in one take. Ronan records it while looking at lyrics sheet to make sure that all the words are right. 3. Fly Ronan to Dubai, where there are some amazing sceneries - and oh you can say that the video was filmed 'all over the world' too, since it features scenes shot at that group of islands making up 'the world'. 4. That makes it an expensive video. So nobody could call that a 'cheap' video. I hope your single falls outside top 40 when its released. Then perhaps you can do it the right way and give your other songs a try. Your 'Back In The Backseat' song is quite decent, could probably give you a top 20. If you want a ballad that's even easier. But as for now, all credibility's been lost. And if you want to be seen as an artist again instead of just a pretty face, I'm afraid you'll have to do it all over again and start from scratch. ::: posted by Wings at 7/28/2006 12:37:00 PM
